Introduction to the mindset of an Explorer
inspired by the National Geographic Learning Framework

  • What does it mean to be an Explorer?
    • Students think-pair-share ideas of how they would describe an Explorer
  • Characteristics of Explorers
    • We watched a series of short videos to meet a variety of Explorers
    • Students took notes using the following guiding questions:
      • What are characteristics of an Explorer?
      • Why do they explore the world?
      • How do they make a difference?
      • What do they explore?
    • Students were tasked with preparing a draft and final one-pager to articulate responses to the guiding questions using evidence from the videos.

While I used a variety of videos to share with students, the story of Jason De León's work was of particular interest to my students due to our geographic proximity to the US-Mexico border and because of family background and experiences with migration from the US from Mexico.
