iEARN
is a non-profit organization made up of over 30,000 schools and youth organizations in more than 140 countries. iEARN empowers teachers and young people to work together online using the Internet and other new communications technologies. Over 2,000,000 students each day are engaged in collaborative project work worldwide. iEARN International is registered as an NGO in Spain and has an international office in Callus, Spain.

I participated in an iEARN projects in the Spring of 2014. My 8th Graders have been participating in a Global Learning Circle with students from Russia, Belarus, Germany, China, Jordan, Pakistan and South Africa. You can see my students' projects here.

I highly recommend this venue for global project-based learning. There was an amazing amount of support from the project coordinator and a vibrant community of teachers. We cooresponded through the iEARN message board over 3 months and the coordinator set up a web page for student projects.

Global Teacher Education

Our Mission is to ensure that U.S. teachers are properly trained to prepare our young people to cope and thrive in a globally-connected world. By partnering with colleges of education and professional bodies in the education and teacher preparation spaces, GTE will support the internationalization of teacher preparation programs by connecting professionals, as well as advancing and disseminating research and best practices.

This mission is based on a vision of our nation’s young people being prepared to become truly global citizens – confident in their own culture, yet able to understand and appreciate other cultures with which they will increasingly interact in their personal, social and economic lives.

Project Peace Pal
Project PeacePal is a not-for-profit organization that empowers youth by developing essential life skills such as effective communication, intercultural understanding, critical thinking, confidence, and non-violent conflict resolution. Our goal is to create mindful leaders for tomorrow through the development of person to person connections across borders and over time. Through these connections can come an understanding of our common humanity, and the recognition of our similarities, creating a feeling of kinship and the resulting desire to help each other. The work of PeacePal is to provide an antidote to the inevitable conflict which arises when people are disconnected and see themselves as different from each other.

We believe that sustainable peace is only possible in a world where we experience our kinship as members of the human family and find joy in helping each other.

World Wise Schools
Peace Corps’ innovative Coverdell World Wise Schools program brings the Peace Corps experience home to American classrooms. The newly redesigned World Wise Schools site makes it easier than ever for you to find your favorite free cross-cultural learning materials including videos, lesson plans, podcasts, publications, and much more.

In addition to the online learning materials, WWS also enables educators to connect their classrooms with current and returned Peace Corps Volunteers. Visit the Classroom Correspondence and World Wise Speakers program pages today to sign up for one or both of these exciting programs!

Teach Unicef

TeachUNICEF is a portfolio of free global education resources. Resources cover grades PK-12, are interdisciplinary (social studies, science, math, English/language arts, foreign/world languages), and align with standards. The lesson plans, stories, and multimedia cover topics ranging from the Millennium Development Goals to Water and Sanitation.

Our mission is to support and create well-informed global citizens who understand interconnectedness, respect and value diversity, have the ability to challenge injustice and inequities and take action in personally meaningful ways. We hope that in providing engaging and academically rich materials that offer multiple voices, we can encourage the exploration of critical global issues while presenting opportunities to take action.

Facing the Future

We accomplish our mission by providing educators with the tools and resources they need to ignite their students’ interest in complex global issues while helping them achieve academically. Our approach is positive and solutions-oriented, and our business model is systemic and leveraged: Facing the Future programming reaches hundreds of thousands of students each year at a cost of less than $2 per student.

  • Understand global issues and sustainability in a way that shows the connections between population, environment, consumption, poverty, conflict, and other global issues
  • Develop a global perspective
  • Learn critical thinking skills
  • Be inspired to take personal action

America and Europe provided a solid, experiential, personal connection to people, places, and to the commitment to Global Education. I draw from my experiences with UWP everyday.

Voki

I've used Voki with my 8th grade class and they love it.

Tagxedo
Tagxedo turns words -- famous speeches, news articles, slogans and themes, even your love letters -- into a visually stunning word cloud, words individually sized appropriately to highlight the frequencies of occurrence within the body of text.

Wordle

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.

Penzu

I've started using Penzu with my 6th grade Language Arts class for weekly responses to literature and with my 8th grade class for in-class writing and collaboration.
