Global Learning: Fostering knowledge, attitudes and skills for global citizenship
A Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Capstone Project
By Jennifer A. Chavez-Miller
At the end of January, 2015, my daughter and I flew from balmy Albuquerque, New Mexico to dazzling Miami, Florida. Racing through the airport, we caught a whiff from the Juan Valdez cafe and asked for directions to our gate. Breathless, we queued up with the other passengers who were sporting shorts, sandals, and healthy tans. In contrast, we were carrying our down jackets and wearing boots. We may have been departing from sunshine and warmth, but we were all flying towards northern latitudes. Destination: Finland.

This portfolio is the product of my four-month experience in Finland through the Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program. I had the opportunity to visit schools and meet educators and students around the country to learn how teachers in Finland engage students in learning for global competence.
The objectives of this portfolio are as follows:
![]() Jennifer is a middle school teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She and her daughter had the privilege of living in Jyväskylä, Finland, from February - May, 2015. While her daughter was attending a neighborhood school, Jennifer was studying Finnish education through school visits, long talks with teachers, meeting students, and discussions with local and national education leaders. Favorite Finland experiences included a reindeer sleigh ride through a snowy forest by moonlight; seeing the Northern Lights; taking a husky-dog sled ride; skiing and snowboarding for PE class in February; experiencing a Finnish winter and watching spring unfold; and leaving Finland with days that have more than 22 hours of visible light.
