Global Education Unit:
Being American: An examination of the struggle for civil liberties for historically disenfranchised groups of Americans

This lesson is presented in the format of a Project-Based Learning unit.
The literature piece for this Social Studies unit is Firebrands: Portraits from the Americas by Shaun Slifer and Bec Young. A review of this book on the Zinn Education Project website includes this:
These beautifully illustrated mini-poster pages showcase radicals, dissidents, folk singers, and rabble- rousers, from Emma Goldman to Tupac, Pablo Neruda to Fred Hampton, from Muhammed Ali to Zumbi dos Palmares, from Alberta to Buenos Aires.
I have chosen this book and use this book in my classroom because it does not solely feature citizens of the United States, but citizens of the Americas. This anthology introduces my students to people they should know about like Pablo Neruda , Luisa Capetillo, and Alicia Moreau de Justo and re-introduces students to people they do know through the lenses of social justice and resistence like Muhammed Ali, Sojourner Truth, and Sitting Bull.
I am presente this lesson to my students in the Fall of 2014.
